Spatial conservation prioritization methods answer questions related to spatial resource allocation in biodiversity conservation. These same methods can be applied in more general land use planning, where multiple benefits and multiple costs need to be balanced. In ecologically based applications biodiversity and the environment are usually described in fairly high detail and costs are aggregated in a relatively coarse manner. In resource economics, one could assume vice versa is often true.
In this presentation, I will illustrate ecologically based spatial prioritization methods by some examples, including ecologically informed environmental impact avoidance in peat mining in Finland and balancing agriculture and extractive land uses with expanded ecotourism in South Africa. The spatial prioritization methods described are publicly available in the software Zonation (v4), which is freely available from http://cbig.it.helsinki.fi/software/zonation/. Zonation is, among other things, applicable to reserve network design, environmental impact avoidance, biodiversity offsetting, and for accounting of biodiversity and ecosystem services in general land use planning. The optimization method of Zonation differs from, e.g. integer programming applied to an objective function. In Zonation, the priority ranking is generated by an iterative process that applies stepwise minimization of marginal loss and re-balancing of benefits and costs through the (spatial) ranking.
